Ted Johnson was born white. He grew up in Maine where there is no racism, or so he thought. After witnessing a terrible act of prejudice he decides to experience racial hatred personally. Special skin treatment turns his skin black and alters his features to the point where his own wife and parents do not recognize him. He re-enters his old world of family and friends, in the bar, at the club, at work, "pretending to be a friend" of Ted only discover the truly dark side of all of those around him.
